Happy Gas Dentistry for Anxious Patients

A fear of the dentist is surprisingly very common. Here at Robe Dental, we offer anxious patients’ happy gas to help you feel relaxed and as comfortable as possible during your dental appointment. If you’re delaying regular dental check-ups or vital dental treatment, happy gas might be an option for you.

What is Happy Gas?

Happy gas is an inhalation style sedation that relieves anxiety and calms your body and mind during dental procedures. Its usefulness stems from how quickly it comes into effect, and how quickly it can be reversed, not to mention there is zero downtime and minimal side effects. This technique produces emotions of joy, euphoria and relaxation throughout the appointment, hence the happy gas title.

How does it work?

The technique involves breathing in small amounts of nitrous and oxygen through a nasal inhaler. This should be comfortable and can be adjusted to suit your levels of comfort. It is colourless and odourless, so you won’t notice it at all. After 2 to 3 minutes later you will start to feel relaxed, carefree and happy. Unlike general anaesthetic, you will remain fully conscious. Being awake throughout the treatment means that you will be able to swallow and converse with the dentist.

Once the treatment is complete, the patient is given pure oxygen. Around 10 minutes after, the patient is back to normal, safe to drive home after treatment and can return to their usual activities. Not only is it safe for children, but it is a preferred method for many dentists. There is absolutely nothing you need to do in order to prepare for your happy gas appointment

Happy gas is safe form of sedation and only a minority of patients will experience negative side effects. These may include:

  • Headaches
  • Shivering
  • Excessive sweating
  • Nauseas and/or vomiting
  • Fatigue
