World Cavity Free Future Day: Babies are Sweet Enough

Today is World Cavity Free Future day (WCFFDay)! Launched in 2016 by the Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future (ACFF), WCFFDay is an initiative to raise awareness of dental caries and to encourage action towards achieving a cavity-free future. Now in its fourth year, the WCFFDay continues to gain momentum, this year targeting ‘babies are sweet enough’ – as healthy teeth are essential to a child’s well-being.

Cavities can affect children as soon as they develop their first teeth, with more than 600 million children worldwide affected by Early Childhood Caries. Dental caries is a disease which, when left untreated, can lead to dental cavities (tooth decay). How? Sugars in the foods and drinks we consume feed the bacteria in our mouth which builds up and forms a biofilm (plaque) on your teeth. This plaque releases an acid as a by-product, attacking the outer layer of your tooth enamel to cause tooth decay.

To effectively prevent your child from Early Childhood Caries, the introduction of sugary food and drink should be at a later age, with reduced frequency of it consumption. Your child’s teeth should be brushed twice-a-day with an age appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste and their caries risk should be assessed by a dental professional once they reach the age of one, and re-evaluated periodically.

As a largely preventable disease, Early Childhood Caries is an unacceptable burden for children, families and society. For more information, visit www.wcffday.org.
